Commit to life to truly let go

How many times have you heard concepts about non-attachment or phrases like it’s never about the outcome? If you have read spiritual texts, you probably might have heard such terms. They carry a lot of truth. It’s often the desire that our life has to be a certain way which creates conflict, stress, comparison, etc. By letting go of the need for life to be a certain way, we can come to accept life as it is and thus develop the ability to accept ourselves completely. This means we can surrender to life and let go of controlling it. The feeling of completeness, lightness, and joy that comes as a result of this practice is beautiful.
Certainly, I can speak from my personal journey. If I look back at my life only a few years ago, most of my motivation was based on achieving specific results, goals, and ambitions, which resulted in me trying to control life — to the point that I ended up studying control systems engineering in a college in South India.
Yes, sometimes life gives you a slap in the face to remind you of the truth! This is where I had a shift in consciousness, and life took on a completely different dynamic. I learned how to surrender to life and follow the flow. For a mind that is completely invested in doing, strategizing, intention-setting, and achieving, this is no small task. It meant years of deconditioning the neural pathways in the brain.
The transformation that has happened as a result is beyond words. But I can say that nowadays I find myself completely surrendering to the simple beauty, gratitude, and love toward life, which opens me up to higher-dimensional connections — the subtle and lighter frequencies that simply elevate you, motivate you, speak to the depth of your bones, and often bring you to tears.
But that’s not the end of the story.
If we are simply practicing detachment, we may feel lightness, bliss, etc., but life has other beautiful qualities as well — commitment, drive, passion, adventure, etc. For life to be complete and whole, we need to embrace life completely. Only by committing to life, by expressing our uniqueness, and by working towards goals will we see our attachment to life. Only by seeing attachment can we become aware of it and then let it go.
The point being, life is yearning to create and express through you. It’s only a spiritual identity that denies this. I always find that looking at nature and drawing reflection from it helps me. Nature is expressing fully — look at a tree — the greenery, the strength, the resilience.

But how do you engage in life? What is the motivation behind our actions?
I would like to share a story that happened to me recently, which was very illuminating. I was living in Gokarna near the beach, and there was a neighbor who lived next to us who was a great swimmer. On any typical day, he could swim a few kilometers into the ocean. I wouldn’t say I’m a great swimmer — I often find myself struggling to swim even a few meters along the fringes of the ocean.
But one day, I received this beautiful wisdom from him. He said that when he swims, he is completely relaxed, swims slowly, and enjoys every moment. I decided to try that approach, and almost overnight my swimming distance improved to three or four times what I usually swam. I was ecstatic. What’s more, I enjoyed swimming even more than I used to.

I also learned from that experience that this is not just a swimming tip, but a life philosophy. If I can engage in life from a place of not needing anything, but simply allowing myself to express, then I can be completely relaxed, enjoy the creative process, and, interestingly, achieve far more than when I am constantly trying and forcing.
So how are you being inspired to express in your life and what motivates you?
When we commit to life in this way by expressing our uniqueness, we most likely will face challenges — which is a good thing, because those challenges give us an opportunity to grow as beings.
So take any goals that you are working towards in your life.
What qualities are you expressing through them?
What sort of challenges are coming in the way, and how do you overcome them?
